10 French Words Every Food Lover Should Know
(beginners list)

Picture

#1:  Boulangerie:
Adorable little shops with a back wall filled with fresh,
artisanal bread loaves in a variety of shapes and sizes.
 Think..."Beauty and the Beast".

#2:  Baguette:
Stick-like bread loaves with a hard outer crust and tender, elastic center.  Exact English translation is "rod".
Fascinating fact:  French law prescribes the recipe used.  If there’s too much deviation…it’s not a baguette.

#3  Patisserie
An even more adorable little shop with a rack of artisinal breads AND  glass cases filled with edible works of art called pastries.

#4 Éclair:
Airy pastry with a creamy filling and
 topped with a sweet frosting.

#5 :  Pain au chocolat
pronounced PAH oh shock oh LAH
(Heaven forbid PAIN and Chocolate go together!)

Pastry made of croissant-like dough  accented with a strand of chocolate running through the middle of it.  When eaten, the buttery pastry and chocolate  seem to
 simultaneously melt in your mouth!

A delightful variation of this is pain aux raisins.

#6:  Macaron
Two small cookies with a light chewy center and a crunchy crust which form a sandwich for a sweet filling.

#7:  Madeleine
Small  buttery sponge cakes (about 2”) baked in the shape of a seashell.  These are making a comeback as a popular treat in France.

Crêpe  vs. Galette
#8 and #9
Crêpes are like very thing pancakes made from white flour and are usually used for desserts.  Favorite fillings include fruits, Nutella,  caramel sauces and chantilly.
Galettes are made with a buckwheat flour and filled with cheeses, charcuterie, and vegetables.  In the USA galettes are often called dinner crêpes.

#10
Crème Brulée
Heart attack rich custard dessert made of heavy cream, sugar and eggs steam-baked in the oven.
Upon  removal fom the oven,  white sugar is sprinkled on top and carmelized with a torch. Try this at home!   Many other cultures have a similar dessert containing cream, sugar and eggs...

but the French win again for being the most decadant!
